Welcome to Therapy in Nature

COUNSELLING AND PSYCHOTHERAPY

Hello, my name is Rowan St Clair and I'm a counsellor providing walk and talk therapy in central and north London.

During a busy London life, we sometimes miss the parks, woodlands, lakes and wildlife that can be found even in the heart of the city. Yet there’s increasing evidence that spending time in nature has benefits for both physical and mental health.

I'm a qualified integrative counsellor and ecotherapist offering walking therapy sessions outdoors. I provide traditional counselling or psychotherapy, walking or sitting in beautiful parks, heath or woodlands in Camden and Islington.

I’m led by my clients’ preferences, so sitting in the shade or taking a slow amble on the paths is as welcome as a hike across the heath.

As well as walk and talk counselling in Camden, Islington and Westminster parks, I also offer online sessions and in-person, indoor sessions in Bloomsbury/Holborn and in Archway. Please contact me to discuss possibilities.

I work with people from all walks of life and backgrounds, coming to me with a diverse range of problems. As a fully-qualified counsellor I am a member of the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy, and abide by their code of ethics.

Making the decision to see a counsellor is a big step to take - but it can be a positive one. Please read on to find out more about how I could help you.

ABOUT NATURE THERAPY

Nature therapy can be traditional counselling or psychotherapy, while walking or sitting outdoors in nature.

Connection with the natural world around us - perhaps watching the ducks on a pond, breathing the fresh air - can help deepen our awareness of our sensations and feelings.

Walk and talk therapy provides the benefits of physical exercise, which can help alleviate depression and channel some of the energy of anxiety. It can create natural metaphors and open up questions for us (where are you heading? which path will you take?). Simply sitting in natural surroundings can also be a calming experience.

Walking therapy outdoors can help us connect with our experience of being human in an uncertain world, helping us find ourselves in times of confusion, pain or stress. Our senses can ground us as we feel the breeze, rain or sun, hear birds sing and leaves rustle, and see the colours of nature.

Therapy in nature is a confidential space for you to explore your own, inner nature while deepening your connection with the natural world.

CONTACT ME

Feel free to contact me if you have any questions about how counselling works, or to arrange an initial assessment appointment. This enables us to discuss the reasons you are thinking of coming to counselling, whether it could be helpful for you and whether I am the right therapist to help.

You can also call me on 07852 994982 if you would prefer to leave a message or speak to me first. I am happy to discuss any queries or questions you may have prior to arranging an initial appointment.

All enquires are usually answered within 24 hours; all contact is strictly confidential and uses secure phone and email services.

FEES & AVAILABILITY

I offer weekly, 1-1 walk and talk therapy sessions in Camden, Islington and Westminster; each session lasts 50 minutes.

My fee is £60 per session.

Our first two sessions are online, so as to meet and discuss some practicalities before we meet outdoors. I also offer indoor counselling and psychotherapy sessions in Archway and Holborn or Bloomsbury as well as online counselling sessions nationwide. I welcome clients who wish to combine some online counselling with walk and talk therapy.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

What if it's raining?

Sessions continue throughout the seasons and I ask clients to come prepared for changes in weather. If there are weather warnings or park closures due to storms or gales, or heavy downpours, however, we can meet online or on a milder day.

What should I wear?

What makes you comfortable, including shoes suitable for walking, a warm jacket or coat and waterproof clothing if required; sunscreen and/or a sunhat in summer.

What should I bring?

A bottle of water, sunscreen when needed, any extras you might require.

How long is a session?

Therapy sessions last 50 minutes, although sometimes outdoor sessions last up to ten minutes longer if our route takes us further.

How do we choose a route?

We can follow a set route or follow our instincts: the London parks provide signposted paths as well as opportunities to go off the beaten track.

What if the park is busy or noisy?

London parks can get busy in summer months, but we can still find quieter spaces on our walks. If you’re concerned about being overheard, we can find a tranquil place away from the main paths.

Is it suitable for me?

If you enjoy being outdoors in nature, walk and talk sessions can enhance the therapeutic experience. We’ll have our first two sessions online or in therapy rooms before we go outdoors, so I’ll ask you about any health conditions then and you can ask me about any concerns or requirements you might have.

Please do contact me for an initial call if you’re thinking about outdoor therapy and would like to see if it’s for you.
